2009
Oct 16th 17th and 18th 2009
To all members and those who
should be,
As always we had another
exciting race and a great way to end the 2009 racing season. The event is always
well organized and everything ran pretty much on schedule. The AA/GAS class
represented themselves in fine fashion with 8 cars in attendance with an
additional 5 non-members. Considering the economy not a bad turnout plus the
number of spectators was more than I had anticipated.
During the event a number of
exciting things occurred.
The first and most important
was that the Renteria Bros (and dad) were crowned Heritage Champions and
Association Champions. Congratulations to the family and their entire crew.
We had Cecil Mathews
re-introduce his 55 T-Bird with Jirka’s power plant and he ran his best ever ET
going 6.62, Unfortunately on his next run some overflow fuel got on his right
tire and snapped him into the wall.
Current plans call for Cecil to repair the car for a return in 2010.
Max Abbey made his driving
debut, replacing his dad in the Goshgarian/Abbey Corvette. We look forward to
Max doing as good a job as pop.
Chuck Moore, running a new
blower set up from Les Davenport had low ET and top speed for the event going
6.52 at 214.98. He was unable to back it up as he broke the blower belt during
the 1st round.
Eliminations:
Rich Roberts and Howard
Anderson, the number 6 and 8 qualifiers respectfully, squared off in the final
that didn’t take place until 7:00 p.m. due to breakage and oil downs.
In Round 1 Howard prevailed
over Chuck Moore with a 6.76 sec e.t. at 205.62 mph when Chuck broke his blower
belt,
Rich put away Mike Leonard
with a hole shot and a 6.82 sec e.t. and a 202.79 trap speed.
Round 2 saw Howard get a
single when Sean Renteria had a crank trigger go bad and the car wouldn’t
start.
Rich got around Rob Moore and
the “Batmobile” with a 6.77 e.t. which was his quickest time of the event.
After the second round Howard
found out that he had broken his headers and he was scrambling to get them
fixed or replaced.
To his credit Rich waited
until Howard got them repaired rather than take a single for the win. While all
this was going on the track had cooled significantly and the race turned out to
be a peddle-fest. Rich left first and was on his way to a win when the car got
loose in second gear and way out of shape. In the other lane Howard was having
traction problems but he was able to recover and go around Rich for the win
with a sub par 7.17 e.t
The Pay-out for the race will
include an extra $200 for Rich from Jim Burns’ company plus we had some
non-members in eliminations so those dollars will be shared among the Assoc
members. Works out to be $60 each.
Rich Roberts- $460 Rob Moore-$160 Sean Renteria- $160
Chuck Moore- $110 Cecil Matthews-$110 Mike Leonard- $110
